Recycle Bin

Here is the guide for how to schedule your computer to automatically remove system’s junk files from Recycle Bin after a certain amount of time on Windows 10. Only a delete action will not permanently remove the files from the computer. This delete action only moves files into the Recycle Bin, where it stays for quite a bit of time by using the computer's valuable space on the hard drive.

Definitely you know how to empty the Recycle Bin but chances are that you usually forget to do this job regularly. You do not proceed to delete the trash content until and unless you notice that your computer is running out of space.

But do not panic! By using a feature called Task Scheduler, you can automatically command your Windows 10 to clean the Recycle Bin and to reduce the pressure on the hard drive. This Task Scheduler schedules a fixed time of maintenance then cleans the bin at that particular time on a regular basis.

Easy steps to automatically empty the Recycle Bin on schedule:

  • Go to Start, search for Task Scheduler, and press Enter
  • Then right-click Task Scheduler Library and click New Folder
  • Now name the folder My Tasks or anything descriptive (You want to do this to keep your tasks organized and separated from the system tasks.)
  • Right-click the newly created folder and select Create task option
  • On the General tab, give a name to the task, such as Empty Windows Recycle Bin
  • On the Triggers tab, click New to create an action that will trigger the task
  • Now select and configure On a schedule, but you can pick from a number of trigger actions, including At log on, At startup, On an event, and more

Important Tip: If you use the schedule option as a trigger, use the Weekly/Monthly option, which provides some time to recover deleted pictures and files from Recycle Bin.

  • On the Actions tab, click New
  • Under Settings, on Programs/script enter cmd.exe
  • Under Settings, on Add arguments enter the following argument and click OK
  • /c "echo Y|PowerShell.exe -NoProfile -Command Clear-RecycleBin"
  • Click OK to complete the task

However, the company Microsoft always facilitates its users to reduce their extra work burden and allows them to have the best experience of technology. The latest edition of Windows 10 has come up with more advanced as well as user-friendly features. Task Scheduler is one of them and this feature will not only reduce the work burden of the user but also will prevent the computer from being slow.

Storage Sense

Windows 10 Developers Update has added a lot of new features and ‘Storage Sense’ is among them. This feature is able to delete all the temp files and a month or so old Recycle Bin files automatically. Go through the steps on how to enable and use it.

Storage Sense is kind of a small version of Disk Cleanup. This can clean up the useless files like temp files and Recycle bin files once in a while when enabled. This may not help in freeing the disk space in large, but to a limit, it helps in keeping your storage a bit efficient.

Open settings by clicking the Windows icon in the bottom of the screen or press Windows + I, then select Systems options.

Now in the Systems Windows select Storage and you will see Storage Sense. Turn On the option.

You can see the option to change what Storage Sense removes. To change the preferences, click on the link Change.

There are two options– To delete temp files or old Recycle Bin files. As per your preference you can either choose Storage Sense to delete old Recycle Bin files or temp files or both. If you want Windows to clean up the disk in one go, you can click the option Clean now.

Hopefully, in the future this will include more cleanup options. Though, it helps you to free up a little bit of drive space – especially when you are using apps that store a lot of temporary files.

Additionally, there is one more option to clean up or to manage the disk space. Let’s see how to do it:

Go to setting > Systems > Storage, here click on C: Drive to see what is occupying the storage space.

Once you open, you will see a colour canvas. This shows which program has occupied how much space.

Go through each section to check where you can save the disk space by deleting unnecessary files.

System and Reserved

You should really avoid touching this one. It holds all the necessary elements for your PC to function. It comprises ‘system files’ to run your Windows accurately, few files for ‘Virtual Memory’ to let your computer do multitasking, ‘System restore files’– to restore earlier versions and a ‘Hibernation file’ which allows your computer to sleep while continuing the user state. This file takes up a lot of space like almost 6 GB, if you do not use it then disable it to free up the disk space.

Apps and Games

Here you can see all the games and apps installed on your computer. You can search these programs on any drive and sort them according to size, installation date or name.

Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Desktop

You can manage your files saved in each folder at ‘User Account Directory’ that is at C:\User\User Name\. You can check the space occupied in their respective window.

Mail, Maps, OneDrive

Files saved on OneDrive on your PC too takes up space. You can see how much space has been used, by downloading email attachments, maps, documents and other related apps in their respective folders. And subsequently, delete the unwanted files.

Temporary Files

This is where you can throw away all the unwanted files and avail some disk space. This folder holds all the downloads, temp cache files, recycle bin files and earlier build of Windows including windows.old files. Search each of the folders for where you can empty some space. Deleting Windows previous version will leave you with much free space.

Other Files

This section contains the folders that take up huge space on your drive and do not come under any section mentioned above. You can search around this to see if you can get some disk space.

Pay some attention while deleting the files. But in case you have removed some useful documents permanently from the hard drive, do not get worried you can always go for data recovery software. There are plenty of them which are excellent in recovering data on Windows.

Conclusion

You see how much of the space you got back just by simply eliminating unnecessary files. You can take advantage of Storage Settings and Storage Sense distinctly if you ever want to clean your hard drive on Windows. If you still think that way is not your cup tea to perform, we recommend you to install IGS Cleaner, the best PC cleaner that will take care of space management and will protect your system from other threats as well.
